January 2016

DESPITE BITTER COLD AND RAIN for much of this month, just one long, happy day spent working in the garden was all that was needed to clear my winter blues away…

The lure of the garden is so strong that I have recently been asking myself if I can really be a true artist. This has been a rather depressing thought, so I was mightily encouraged to learn that Claude Monet used the term ‘artist gardener’ to describe himself. Hurrah – then it is OK for me to aspire to be both.

Spurred on by this thought, the sight of hellebores peeping from mounds of crisp autumn leaves sent me running into my studio with a few choice flowers and out with my oils. This little painting is the result.

So, conflict over! For 2016, instead of resenting both for the time they take from each other, I aim to celebrate my garden for inspiring my art and enjoy working in it with a free conscience.
