January 2014

NEW HOME, NEW YEAR and the start of my new garden diary…it is hard to know where to begin but best perhaps by first describing the site.

The house backs onto a square walled terrace and a gravelled path alongside the studio leads through to the main garden which forms a dog-leg to the side of the property.

This area is frighteningly bare – predominantly laid to lawn with sparse beds on three sides and a row of tall, ivy-bound Thuya on the fourth. There is no natural focal point or ‘borrowed landscape’ and it lacks the enclosed atmosphere of my previous garden but, hurrah, the conifers have been pruned, a giant tree stump and storm-blown tree removed, and, thanks to Jilayne Rickards I now have an accurate, drawn to scale plan to doodle on.

Winter aconites are flowering abundantly in one far corner and the soil is like chocolate cake mix – all is not lost!
