Garden Diary: October 2018

I’m feeling blessed…

My new tripod ladder and topiary shears have arrived! Lots to be done but at last I feel safe clipping back honeysuckle and the tall, cloud-pruned Viburnum tinus. Originally a big lumpy shrub, it’s now shaping up nicely to become a focal point of the courtyard and the wobbly old decorating ladder can go to the dump.

Nursery grown cloud-pruned specimens are expensive and I really recommend you try creating your own. It’s much easier than it looks and there are plenty of books on the subject and advice on the internet for guidance. In my experience it also helps calm the nerves if the subject of your first attempt is a shrub that you are considering removing anyway!

I can’t resist mentioning the Niwaki range of ladders and tools. Made in Japan they are expensive but exquisitely made and ideal for all topiary work:-)
