Garden Diary: May 2018

Oh sweet May!

The garden is now truly a box of delights and fresh, flowery magic greets each new day. Bearded iris’s are thriving in the free draining soil and at the far end of the garden Rosa banksiae ‘Lutea’, the climbing species rose, is literally smothered in primrose yellow blossom.

And the wait is over…

The Japanese Tree Peony, Peony suffruticosa Double White, planted as a tiny shrub four years ago is in flower for the very first time and plump, swelling buds, that I have been watching like a hawk, are bursting into exquisite, highly scented, white blooms. Although they look delicate, tree peonies are hardy shrubs with tough woody stems that allow the plant to survive through the winter. They like light, well-drained soil, prefer to be in dappled shade and require little pruning. I’m in heaven!
