February 2014

RELENTLESS WEATHER this month has prevented any real gardening and instead given me time to get a feeling for the character of the garden before making changes.

It has gone through many phases. Much larger at one time, over the years parts have been sold off and old properties around it demolished to make way for new housing. One side is overlooked and another backs onto a private tarmacked car park but two old walls of local brick remain – oh joy!

Treated so unkindly in the past I feel the need to tread gently now. Names and dates carved into the brick nod to its history and remind me that I am just another temporary custodian but, under my watch, I hope that in a few years time I will see the garden shine again.

Some gems are emerging, isolated clumps of hellebores are full of nodding flowers and a small cherry tree is pink with spring blossom.
